HD 209458

Planet HD 209458b is evaporating. It is so close to its parent star that its heated atmosphere is simply expanding away into space. Some astronomers studying this distant planetary system now believe they have detected water vapor among the gases being liberated. This controversial claim, if true, would mark the first instance of planetary water beyond our Solar System, and indicate anew that life might be sustainable elsewhere in the universe.

Marefumi Art Show at Wall of Sound

Marefumi came from Tokyo to hang a show (here with Jeffery) at Wall of Sound. He was a regular at the store while going to art school here and before moving back to Japan. He brought a lot of great work and there's an opening this Friday night at 7. His show will be there until the end of May, check it out...

Living on the Kamo River, Kyoto

While bicycling along the Kamo River in Kyoto, and stopping to photograph... I noticed "encampments" under the bridges. The first I saw looked like small flea markets or rummage sales that were out of place. The people living there were collecting all sorts of stuff, probably a lot of it given to them. It looked like an art installation and from a distance I wasn't sure what to make of them until getting closer and realizing that the city was allowing people to build housing. I'll be posting more pictures of a few of the settings that included major pack rat mode. The pictures here are of the camp of a relatively ordered couple. They weren't there when I started to photograph, but arrived soon after. Fortunately, they were quite friendly and mostly went about their business at first, and answered questions when I asked... the man spoke a fair amount of English. He had cut himself while setting up for the night and his wife immediately dressed the wound. I didn't get their names, but he proudly told me their dog's name was "Daisuke, number one dog in Kyoto."

Field and Pitch

Not sure where I got this, it folds out as a note card with another small illustration inside.I think David Mahler, baseball fanatic (poet, musician), made it. The top drawing is for baseball at its most basic. The second is for Daisuke Matsuzaka, who throws something like the fadeaway drop ball, some call it the gyro ball - whatever, it's nasty. Today he struck out ten in his A.L. debut. It's not his fault that the Red Sox paid his Japanese team 50 million dollars just for the right to sign him. Next week, at Fenway, the first batter he'll face... Ichiro!

Stuff in Boxes

Some words to go with these pictures... while going through boxes looking for pictures of Jezebel the cat, I found lots of stuff that's been unseen by anyone for a while. So, I'll be scanning the ones that I like mostly and putting it on the Flickr page I recently started in a set called "stuff in boxes" along with many of the other sights of Lovely Water Parade (musicians, Japan, polaroids, etc.). So, not all pictures/graphics will wind up here, probably more there... eventually. Check it out, if inclined...
