String Specialists

Wall of Sound presented the third annual installment of "String Specialists" at the Rendezvous Jewel Box theater last week. It was a fine night of diverse and engaging sound & song. Pictured above are 3 of the 8 performers - Brian Falconer playing Koto, Tim Young playing a vintage Hofner guitar and Chris Martin playing an instument he just brought back from S.E. Asia (not that you can tell from these pictures...) However, there are more identifiable pictures of these and the other performers on this Wall of Sound page.

Eve Cohen

Eve and I went to look at art today. We then happened upon the Grand Opening party at the tasty Vegetarian Bistro on King St. in the International District.
In the photos above Eve, forever lured by the spell of the fantastic, prepares for her "Kinderkunst" show from last spring at Souvenir in Ballard. Please stay tuned to more appearances from Eve's menagerie of flora and fauna.

Art Books Press

This graphic is from a book I picked up cheap today at the utterly amazing "Art Books Press" tucked away in Ballard unbeknownst to too many. Predominantly specializing in used and new art related books, there's plenty of variety and it's a gem of a Seattle bookstore.

Lewis & Clark

I received the graphic below from an email art list that I get. I may be among the last to know this, but all around the country there are corn maze puzzles being made for the purpose of social activity and, I guess, because they look cool from the sky.
Someone said they recall "Field of Dreams", but it makes me think of the "The Shining". When I took the photo of the cutouts of L&C above, it made me think of what I often think of when I'm out photographing, and that question made famous by Michael Moore... "Dude, Where's My Country?"

Jesse Paul Miller

I just added this Jesse Paul Miller painting to my very modest collection of art. In some reverse order of logic I got it, in trade for photography work, on Jesse's birthday. It felt like I was the one who received the gift and I completely love it. It's a thrift store painting,, altered deftly by Jesse's imaginative hand. Anyone who covers a landscape in black dots and makes it work has obviously got something going on, unless they're an oil company of course....

Trimpin

Trimpin gave a talk at Jack Straw Studios in conjunction with his installation, "Archival Investigations". This is his very earliest work when he first moved to Seattle, dating back to 1980. Back around 1993, we hosted a hanging xylophone installation at Wall of Sound. He was awarded a Genius award in 1997, MacArthur not Stranger. That means, for one thing, a helluva lot more money... Installation is up until February 24th. Check it out...

Lynn Shelton

A couple of times last year, I had the opportunity to shoot stills on independent movie sets. When I heard that Lynn was working on her first feature film,"We Go Way Back" produced by the Film Company, I gave her a call... Lynn and I met in the mid 80's through our mutual friend Lena Sharpe. Lena was the co-founder of Women in Cinema and a talented film producer, as well as a truly wonderful person. She died tragically at an early age in a plane accident while working on a documentary film project on forestry for PBS. Lynn has dedicated her film to Lena.The hard work of the cast and crew of WGWB has paid off with acceptance into this years Slamdance Festival , not to mention a thoughtful story beautifully filmed.
